Slide under the water
let another wave wash over you
Occasionally the exciting future is overtaken by the overwhelming present. Alternately, the unknown future sometimes overshadows the sunshine of today. And I’ve found no way out of this and no way around it and trust me I’ve looked. But for temporary relief I suggest giving in to your urge to slide under the water even if it’s cold even if it’s late even if you have to walk up a dark rocky path back to bed. Slip beneath the surface where your mouth has to stay closed and eyes open is optional and even though the sounds are muted you can still clearly hear the gulls cry and the kids laughing. Pause there if you can even if you’re tempted to jump out immediately because in the pause you can remember how brave you are despite your secret fear of porcupines, how big you are despite the reality of shrinking, how small you are in the scheme of it all. Walk up the path, eat chocolate and forget to brush your teeth, get in bed with wet hair, let another wave wash over you.
